Flood Watch in Effect; Locally Heavy Rainfall Possible Through Wednesday

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a special weather statement for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan. Locally heavy rainfall is possible through Wednesday morning as a circulation, Invest Area 93W, moves through the region. Rainfall totals of 3 to 5 inches is possible through Wednesday morning.

A flood watch is in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan through Wednesday afternoon. Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible. Be prepared to take action if flash flood warnings are issued. The community it advised to take the following precautionary actions:

  • If driving, be alert for low visibilities and slippery roads in heavy rain;
  • Slow down where water is ponding on the road;
  • Turn Around, Don’t Drown. Avoid walking or driving through flood waters. Just 6 inches of moving water can knock you down, and 2 feet of water can sweep your vehicle away;
  • Do not camp, park, or hike along streams, rivers, and creeks during heavy rainfall. These areas can flood quickly and with little warning.

A thunderstorm advisory is in effect for the Guam International Airport Authority until 10 a.m. Thunderstorms are possible or occurring within 20 nautical miles of the airport. Seek shelter if lightning is seen or thunder is heard.

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) advise the community to practice caution while traveling in rainy conditions, driving below the speed limit and allowing enough braking distance between vehicles.
