Flood Advisory and High Lightning Risk in Effect; Remain Out of the Water

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a flood advisory for Guam, in effect until 5 p.m. this afternoon. Urban and small stream flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected. Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas is expected. Between 0.6 and 1 inch of rain has fallen. Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches are expected over the area.

Some locations that will experience flooding include Dededo, Tamuning, Yigo, Mangilao, Barrigada, and Andersen AFB.

Residents and visitors are advised to take the following precautionary actions:
  • If driving, be alert for low visibilities and slippery roads in heavy rain;
  • Slow down where water is ponding on the road;
  • Turn Around, Don’t Drown. Avoid walking or driving through flood waters. Just 6 inches of moving water can knock you down, and 2 feet of water can sweep your vehicle away;
  • Do not camp, park, or hike along streams, rivers, and creeks during heavy rainfall. These areas can flood quickly and with little warning.

A coastal hazard message has been issued for a high lightning risk for Guam until 5 p.m. this afternoon. Occasional cloud to ground lightning is expected for beaches along the north, east, and south coast of Guam. Thunderstorms are expected to produce occasional lightning. The community is advised to remain out of the water to avoid hazardous swimming conditions. Remain indoors if lightning is seen or thunder is heard. If indoors is not accessible, remain inside a vehicle and avoid touching any metal parts.

A thunderstorm warning is in effect for the Guam International Airport until 2 p.m. this afternoon. Thunderstorms are occurring within 5 nautical miles of the airport. Be alert and take precautions as required. These storms have been producing occasional lighting.

A thunderstorm advisory is in effect for the Guam International Airport until 5 p.m. this afternoon. Thunderstorms are possible or occurring within 20 nautical miles of the airport.

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) advise the community to practice caution while traveling in rainy conditions, driving below the speed limit and allowing enough braking distance between vehicles. Also, remain out of the water until the hazards subside.
