Flash Flood Watch and High Surf Advisory Remain in Effect

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office maintain the flash flood watch in effect for Guam through Tuesday evening. A flash flood watch means conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding.

A monsoon trough over the Marianas will result in periods of heavy showers through Tuesday. Due to the amount of previous rainfall, additional rainfall could also result in mudslides along steep terrain and cliffs. Excessive rainfall will cause localized flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas, and rapidly rising streams and rivers. Take the following preparedness actions:

  • Those living in flood-prone areas should take action; clear drainage areas and unblock clogged storm drains in your area to minimize flooding.
  • Do not camp, park, or hike along streams, rivers, and creeks during heavy rainfall. These areas can flood quickly and with little warning.
  • Avoid driving on flooded roads;
  • If driving, be alert for low visibilities and slippery roads in heavy rain;
  • Slow down where water is ponding on the road;
  • Turn Around, Don’t Drown. Avoid walking or driving through flood waters. Just 6 inches of moving water can knock you down, and 2 feet of water can sweep your vehicle away.

high surf advisory and high risk of rip currents remain in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan, until 6 a.m. Tuesday. Large breaking waves of 7 to 9 feet are expected. Dangerous swimming and surf conditions and localized beach erosion are expected. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from the shore into deeper water. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions.

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) remind the community to avoid hazardous surf, especially west facing reefs and beaches. Heed the advice of lifeguards, beach patrol flags, and signs.
