Avoid Dangerous Rip Currents; NWS Advisories in Effect

The National Weather Service (NWS), Weather Forecast Office Guam advised dangerous and frequent rip currents are expected. The following advisories remain in effect:

high risk of rip currents is in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan through Wednesday night. Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away from shore. Dangerous and frequent rip currents are expected along east facing reefs.

Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water. Inexperienced swimmers should not enter the water. Never swim alone. If caught in a rip current, remain calm and stay afloat while waiting for help. If swimming out of a rip current, swim parallel to shore and back toward the beach when possible. Do not attempt to swim directly against a rip current. Rip currents are life threatening.

small craft advisory remains in effect until 6 a.m. Wednesday for the coastal waters of Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan. Northeast winds of 15 to 25 knots with gusts up to 30 knots, and combined seas of 9 to 10 feet will produce hazardous conditions for small craft. Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid boating in these conditions.

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) remind the community to avoid east facing reefs and beaches until hazardous conditions subside. Heed the advice of lifeguards, beach patrol flags, and signs. Rip currents are life threatening.
