The National Weather Service (NWS) Weather Forecast Office Guam is monitoring Tropical Depression 01W, which formed northwest of Palau overnight. As of 1 a.m., 01W was located 9.5N and 130.4E, about 315 miles west-northwest of Koror and 1,010 miles west-southwest of Guam. It is moving northwest at 9 mph with maximum sustained winds of 30 mph. 01W is forecast to intensify, possibly becoming a tropical storm Friday night.
There is no direct threat to the Marianas expected from 01W. However, a high risk of rip currents remains in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan through late tonight. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from the shore into deeper water. If caught in a rip current, do not swim against the current. Swim in a direction following the shoreline, face the shore and call or wave for help.
