6:35 p.m. Tropical Disturbance Continues to Track Toward Marianas

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office continues to monitor Invest Area 90W, a tropical disturbance, located near 6N and 153E, between Chuuk and Pohnpei. 90W is anticipated to move to the west-northwest potentially taking it anywhere from over the Marianas or a passage to the south of Guam.

Uncertainty Remains; Stay Updated for Changes
At this time, some recent model trends suggest 90W could pass south of Guam but as uncertainty remains, this direction and track can change, including a passage through the islands. For now, the Marianas should expect increasing showers, thunderstorms, and gusty winds, developing Saturday and continuing into early next week. Improved modeling and information on timing, winds, and expected rain is anticipated by tomorrow.

Preparedness
Residents and visitors are advised to take the following precautionary actions:
  • Those living in flood-prone areas should prepare to take action such as clearing drainage areas and unblocking storm drains to minimize the potential for flooding;
  • Stay up to date with the latest information;
  • Clear loose debris around your yard and prepare to secure any items, such as tents and canopies, that could become airborne with heavy winds, before inclement weather arrives;
    • Prepare to secure construction sites and loose items on sites.
    • Secure or be prepared to take down signs such as campaign signs
  • Have an emergency kit prepared: Store enough food and water for your household for 7-10 days. Include medication, disinfectant supplies and pet supplies;
    • Secure important documents such as birth certificates, tax papers, and insurance documents and keep copies in a water-proof bag;
  • Review your emergency plan: If you do not have a plan, learn how to create an emergency plan; Have plans for your family members and pets. If you are a person with disabilities or a caregiver for elderly, you may need to take extra steps to plan for those additional needs.
  • Once inclement weather arrives:
    • If driving in heavy rain, be alert for low visibilities and slippery roads;
    • Slow down where water is ponding on the road;
    • Turn Around, Don’t Drown. Avoid walking or driving through flood waters. Just 6 inches of moving water can knock you down, and 2 feet of water can sweep your vehicle away;
    • Do not camp, park, or hike along streams and rivers. These areas can flood quickly and with little warning.
    • When thunder roars, get indoors. Tents, canopies and tarps are not safe shelter during thunderstorms.
