8:35 a.m. Tropical Depression Nuri Expected to Weaken Through Tonight

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office continues to monitor Tropical Depression Nuri, formerly Invest 95W. As of 7 a.m., Nuri was located 11.0N and 138.8E, 115 miles north-northeast of Yap, 440 miles west-southwest of Guam. It is moving slowly east-northeast with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph. It is expected to maintain this general course through Friday, as it approaches and then passes through the Northern Marianas, near or north of Anatahan.

Nuri remains a poorly-organized tropical depression this morning and is no longer expected to reach tropical storm intensity (39 mph or more sustained winds). It is expected to weaken in the next 24 to 36 hours as it heads toward the Marianas.

What to Expect

·       Showers and potential for locally heavy rainfall remain a possibility for the Marianas through Friday evening, especially over Tinian and Saipan, or just west of the islands. Flash flooding risk remains a possibility for Tinian and Saipan.

·       Light and variable winds this morning over Guam and Rota will shift to the south and southwest and become gusty this evening through Friday evening.

Residents and visitors are advised to take the following precautionary actions:

  •  Those living in flood-prone areas should take action to clear drainage areas and unblock storm drains to minimize flooding;
  •  Stay up to date with the latest information;
  •  If driving in heavy rain, be alert for low visibilities and slippery roads;
