The Guam Department of Education (GDOE) received notification of an image circulating via social media, depicting a screenshot of a Facebook post of an individual claiming to shoot up "SHS."
After further research, it is known that the image is circulating across other schools from the continental United States. The named individual is also not a student registered in GDOE and the individual’s public Facebook page is non-existent. Current indications would appear that there is no current threat to local schools.
While there is no guarantee that “SHS” does not refer to the local Southern High School, the offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD), the Mariana Regional Fusion Center (MRFC) along with the Guam Police Department (GPD) are monitoring closely.
School will still be in session tomorrow for all of GDOE to include Southern High School.
Out of an abundance of caution, GDOE, GHS/OCD, MRFC, GPD have increased situational awareness and are taking this very seriously. GDOE staff are postured to take protective measures. GHS/OCD and MRFC will continue to coordinate with GDOE on the situation.
