NWS Advisories in effect for the Marianas

NWS Advisories in effect for the Marianas

The National Weather Service (NWS), Weather Forecast Office Guam, has the following advisories in effect:

A small craft advisory for hazardous seas is in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan coastal waters until 6 a.m. Tuesday. Combined seas of 9 to 11 feet with winds of 19 to 24 mph will produce hazardous conditions for operators of small craft. Inexperienced marines, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid sailing in these conditions.

A high surf advisory and high risk of rip currents remains in effect through tonight for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan. Hazardous surf of 9 to 11 feet is expected through this morning. Avoid venturing near exposed reefs and beaches, especially those facing north, as rip currents will be life threatening. NWS advises, if caught in a rip current, remain calm and swim parallel to shore and back toward the beach when possible. Do not attempt to swim directly against a rip current.

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) remind all residents and visitors to practice extreme caution if near the ocean.
