Multiple Weather Hazards in Effect for Guam Through the Weekend

Multiple Weather Hazards in Effect for Guam Through the Weekend

Issued: October 2, 2026 — 7:45 a.m. ChST

The Guam Homeland Security/Office of Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) advises residents that the National Weather Service (NWS) Tiyan has issued several weather products for Guam in association with Tropical Storm Choi-wan (26W). Hazardous weather and marine conditions are affecting Guam. Residents should prepare for heavy rainfall this morning, strong southwest winds, and hazardous surf and marine conditions continuing over the weekend.

Active Hazards

Flood Advisory — in effect until 9:15 a.m. Friday, October 2. Minor flooding is occurring in low-lying and poor drainage areas, with water over roadways. Additional rainfall is expected through the advisory period.

Wind Advisory — in effect until 4 a.m. Sunday, October 4. Southwest winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are expected.

High Surf Advisory — in effect until 4 a.m. Monday, October 5. Large breaking waves of 8 to 12 feet are expected along north, west, and south facing reefs.

High Rip Current Risk — in effect through late Sunday night, October 4. Dangerous, life-threatening rip currents are expected.

A Gale Warning is in effect for Guam coastal waters until 5 p.m. Saturday, October 3, followed by a Hazardous Seas Watch from Saturday afternoon, October 3, through Sunday afternoon, October 4. The Gale Warning forecasts southwest winds of 25 to 35 knots, frequent gusts up to 45 knots, and seas of 12 to 17 feet. The subsequent Hazardous Seas Watch identifies possible very steep and hazardous seas of 12 to 16 feet.

What You Should Do Now

Residents and motorists are advised to take the following precautions:

• Do not drive on flooded roads. Turn Around, Don't Drown. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.

• Secure loose objects outdoors that can be blown around by gusty winds.

• Stay clear of reefs, shorelines, and the water. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous surf and rip currents.

• Mariners should avoid boating in hazardous conditions and heed the Gale Warning for local coastal waters.

GHS/OCD continues to monitor conditions in coordination with NWS Tiyan and will provide additional information as needed.
