National Preparedness Month is observed each September to raise awareness about the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies that can happen at any time. This year's national theme, "Americans Stand Ready," anchors a monthlong campaign organized around four actions every household can take: Make a Plan, Build a Kit, Know Your Alerts, and Get Involved.
"National Preparedness Month reminds us that readiness begins at home, with each of us," said Esther J. C. Aguigui, Homeland Security Advisor. "Guam faces real threats — from typhoons to earthquakes to other emergencies — and the good news is that simple steps taken today make our families and our island more ready. This year's theme, 'Americans Stand Ready,' reflects the spirit we see across our island every day. I encourage every household to take one step this month: make a plan, build a kit, know your alerts, and get involved."
Throughout the month, GHS/OCD will share island-specific preparedness tips and activities on social media, and encourages partner agencies and the community to promote their own preparedness efforts. Residents can start building a family emergency plan today using the free, fillable form at ready.gov/plan, and can find additional resources at ready.gov. The observance will culminate in the Grand Finale Preparedness Fair on Saturday, September 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Micronesia Mall Center Court.
