What to Expect:
As of 9 p.m., Super Typhoon Bavi was located at 13.7N 147.2E, 160 miles east of Guam. It is moving west-northwest at 13 mph with maximum sustained winds of 165 mph. Bavi is expected to pass through the Marianas, near Rota or in the Tinian Channel, around 8 a.m. Monday morning.
Based on the current forecast, Guam can expect:
- Rain: Rainfall amounts between 12 and 20 inches are possible during Bavi’s passage, resulting in flash flooding through early Tuesday morning. Flood watch remains in effect through late Tuesday night. Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone areas.
- Wind: All of Guam can expect strong tropical storm force winds of 58 to 73 mph, while the northern half of Guam will experience Category 1 typhoon force winds, with maximum speeds forecast to be in the 60 to 80 mph range, with gusts to 100 mph. Loose outdoor items will become projectiles, causing additional damage and possible injury.
- Closest Point of Approach (CPA): CPA to Guam is expected around mid-Monday morning. The worst conditions are expected between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. Monday, July 6.
- Stay Out of the Water: Life-Threatening sea conditions are expected to last until Thursday.
- Waterspouts Possible: Severe thunderstorms are capable of producing localized waterspouts.
GPA Update
Guam Power Authority (GPA) line crews continue to actively address power-related issues and restore service throughout the island in northern, central, and southern sectors until it is determined that conditions are no longer safe for repairs.
Power outages and fluctuations occurred as the weather began to deteriorate this evening. Restoration of power service is being conducted as conditions allow throughout the night. Line crews will stand down when the line supervisors out in the field determine it is necessary, and increased weather conditions make it unsafe to continue repairs. GPA appreciates the community’s patience and understanding as line crews work to safely restore power.
During extreme weather conditions, Trouble Dispatchers will receive calls for emergency power situations such as down energized (sparking) lines, damaged poles or blown transformers. Please stay away from all down lines and equipment as they may still be energized and can cause harm if you come in contact with the lines or equipment. Consider such situations as dangerous and life-threatening. If such conditions are present, please immediately report this situation to GPA's 24-Hour Trouble Dispatch at 671-475-1472/3/4 or via direct message on GPA’s Facebook page. GWA Update
The Guam Waterworks Authority (GWA) reports that 98 wells are online as of 10 p.m. GWA will not shut the water distribution system off during the storm. The Guam Power Authority (GPA) along with GWA electrical crews began activating generators at GWA facilities after 2 p.m. this afternoon. GPA and GWA continue working together to manage and operate standby generators at GWA facilities. The Ugum Surface Water Treatment Plant is online and operating on generator power.
Some customers in Malojloj are experiencing a water outage as the elevated Malojloj booster pump station (BPS) experienced a loss in power earlier this evening. GPA and GWA crews are working on providing power to the BPS and restoring pressure to the area.
Wastewater treatment plant operations are online and GWA Dispatch operators have not received any reports of sewer overflows.
Residents are reminded that outages and instances of low to no pressure may occur as system adjustments may be performed at wells, pump stations, and reservoirs to respond to power loss, fluctuations, refueling, or servicing generators.
