Mawar Debris Pick-up Begins in Tamuning, Two Additional Villages Scheduled for Service

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Typhoon Mawar debris mission continues to make its way through villages throughout Guam, conducting separation and pickup of Mawar related debris from residential properties. Debris separation crews started today in Tamuning, with the villages of Hagat and Sinajana scheduled to begin next week.

Residents are encouraged to complete their debris sorting and staging as soon as possible to make sure they can take advantage of this service. The residential debris project is a free program available for all residential properties, including apartments and condominiums.

Debris Operations currently ongoing in the following villages:

Dededo
Inarajan (Inalahan)
Merizo (Malesso)
Piti
Santa Rita (Sånta Rita-Sumai)
Umatac (Humatak)
Yigo
Tamuning

Debris Operations are scheduled to begin later this week in the following villages:

Asan (Asan-Maina)
Barrigada
Talofofo (Talo’fo’fo)

Debris Operations are projected to begin next week in the following villages:

Agat (Hågat)
Sinajana

Guam residents are asked to please separate debris by type and place it within the right of way (ROW) within 10 ft of the curb prior to the start of pick-up. Eligible storm related debris includes vegetative debris, large appliances, construction and demolition debris and metal (cans, tin.)

Debris should not block the roadway, fire hydrants, powerlines, utilities or transformer boxes. In addition, debris should not be blocked by parked cars, abandoned cars, or by other means. To make the process quick and efficient there will be separate trucks for each category of eligible debris (debris refinement, vegetative debris, appliances, construction and demolition debris and metal.) These trucks may arrive at different times in the clean-up process.

Households will be responsible for safely disposing of ineligible debris. Certain forms of ineligible debris may be taken to one of the three Guam Solid Waste Authority (GSWA) residential transfer stations in Harmon, Hagåt, and Malojloj. Transfer station operation hours are Thursday through Monday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A nominal fee is required for disposal of household trash.

Residents are urged to dispose of their solid waste properly. Illegal dumping is a violation of Guam law. In accordance with 10 GCA §51115(b), illegal dumping is subject to fines of up to $1,000 per day, per violation, along with the clean-up cost associated with the violation.

Flooding can occur slowly over many days or happen very quickly with little or no warning, called flash floods.

Wildfire

Regularly clean the roof and gutters.
Maintain an area approximately 30’ away from you home that is free of anything that will burn, such as wood piles, dried leaves, newspapers and other brush.
Connect garden hoses long enough to reach any area of the home and fill garbage cans, tubs, or other large containers with water.
Review your homeowner's insurance policy and also prepare/update a list of your home's contents.

Fire Weather

Turn on your TV/radio. You’ll get the latest weather updates and emergency instructions.
Know where to go. If you are ordered to evacuate, know the route to take and have plan of where you will go. Check-in with your friends and family.
Keep your car fueled, in good condition, and stocked with emergency supplies and a change of clothes.

Drought

Conserve water

Take shorter showers.

Turn off the water while brushing your teeth or shaving.
Run the washer less frequently and only when you have a full load.
Water your lawn less frequently and do so when the temperature is cooler in the early morning or late evening.
When you run the tap to heat or cool water, keep a pitcher to store the water and use it to water plants.
Avoid washing your car.

Practice fire prevention

Don't set off fireworks when conditions are dry.
Deposit cigarette butts in the proper receptacle to avoid starting a
Pour water over camp fires and backyard fire pits to ensure they are completely out before leaving them unattended.

Follow directions from local officials. If there are restrictions on water usage, be sure to heed them.
