Guam Homeland Security/Office of Civil Defense (GHS/OCD is announcing the opening of emergency shelters ahead of Super Typhoon Bavi (09W).
Condition of Readiness
- Guam remains in COR 3.
Emergency Shelters to Open at 7:00 a.m., Sunday, July 5, 2026
If you need to evacuate to an emergency shelter, before you leave home, shut off your incoming electricity at the main breaker or switch, usually located by the electric meter or in the circuit breaker panel. If you are dependent on an electrically-powered life support system, consider having a backup generator, or make plans ahead of time to go to an alternate location where electricity will be available.
The following emergency shelters will open at 7:00 a.m., Sunday, July 5, 2026:
Northern
- Machananao Elementary School
- Astumbo Elementary School
- Maria A. Ulloa Elementary School
Central
- Ordot/Chalan Pago Elementary School
Southern
- Talo'fo'fo Elementary School
What to Bring to the Shelter
- 7-day supply of food and water for all members of your family
- Bedding
- Personal hygiene products
- Medication
- 7-day supply for infants and toddlers, including diapers and formula
- Valid Photo ID
- Important documents, including birth certificates, passports, and medical immunization cards
Shelter Rules
- Be respectful to fellow residents and staff. No foul language, abusive behavior, stealing, or destruction of property will be tolerated.
- Busing to/from shelters is available at the Mayors' Offices.
- Registration is required. Bring a valid form of photo ID.
- Residents must report tuberculosis or flu-like symptoms.
- Alcoholic beverages, illegal drugs, and weapons are not allowed in the shelter or on shelter grounds. Persons under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs will not be admitted or readmitted.
- Public Law 21-139 prohibits smoking on school premises. Smoking is permitted only in designated outdoor areas; dispose of cigarette butts properly.
- Quiet hours will be announced and enforced in sleeping areas.
- Secure vital documents (birth records, passports, etc.) on your person at all times. The shelter is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
- Parents must maintain responsibility and supervision for their children at all times.
- No cooking or gas stoves.
- For your safety, do not leave the shelter before COR 4 has been declared.
- Only service animals are allowed. Pets cannot be sheltered at this time; make arrangements for pets with family or friends in advance.
Current Storm Status
- Super Typhoon Bavi (09W) remains a Category 5 storm.
- A Typhoon Warning is in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan. A Flood Watch and Coastal Flood Watch remain in effect for Guam.
- Tropical storm force winds are forecast to begin Sunday evening; typhoon force winds are forecast from Monday morning into early Monday afternoon.
GHS/OCD will continue to monitor Super Typhoon Bavi in coordination with NWS Guam and provide updates as the situation develops.
