PUBLIC ADVISORY No. 5

Super Typhoon Bavi (09W) — Category 5; Typhoon Watch in Effect for Guam; Coastal Flood Watch Remains in Effect

Issued: July 4, 2026 — 0900 ChST

Guam Homeland Security/Office of Civil Defense (GHS/OCD), in coordination with the National Weather Service (NWS) in Tiyan, is issuing the following advisory regarding Super Typhoon Bavi (09W).

A Typhoon Watch is in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan. A Flood Watch remains in effect for Guam through late Tuesday night. A Coastal Flood Watch remains in effect for Guam.

Advisory No. 4, issued 1600 ChST July 3, stated that no tropical cyclone watches or warnings were in effect for Guam. A Typhoon Watch was issued by NWS Tiyan earlier that afternoon. This advisory corrects that information and provides the latest storm status below.

• Guam remains in COR 3.

• Bavi has rapidly intensified and is now a Category 5 Super Typhoon. As of the 7 a.m. ChST JTWC bulletin, maximum sustained winds were 160 mph.
• Bavi was located near 12.7°N 151.9°E, approximately 480 miles east of Guam, moving west at 10 mph.
• NWS forecasts Bavi to reach peak intensity of 175 mph on Sunday, followed by a slow weakening trend as it approaches and passes through the Marianas. Forecast intensity at the time of passage is 165 mph.
• The latest forecast track has shifted slightly south and now places the path between Rota and Tinian, nearer to Rota. This track may continue to shift as Bavi approaches.

• This remains a significant threat for all of the Mariana Islands.
• The forecast track could still shift north, closer to Saipan, or south, closer to Guam. All of Guam and the CNMI should plan for and anticipate at least tropical storm conditions; islands closest to the storm's passage will experience much stronger conditions.
• Tropical storm force winds are forecast to begin Sunday evening. Typhoon force winds are forecast from Monday morning into early Monday afternoon.
• Close to the center of Bavi, there is a possibility of catastrophic damage.

• A Flood Watch is in effect for Guam through late Tuesday night.
• Satellite-based estimates indicate rainfall amounts of 12 to 20 inches are possible during Bavi's passage, increasing the risk of flash flooding across Guam and the Marianas, especially near the center of the system.
• Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone areas.

• A Coastal Flood Watch remains in effect for Guam through early Tuesday morning (approximately 6:00 a.m.). Significant coastal flooding is possible, with low-lying homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure at risk of inundation and shoreline erosion.
• Seas over Marianas coastal waters are forecast to build to 25–35 feet and could approach 40 feet near the storm's center. Surf along exposed reefs could reach 25–35 feet.
• A Typhoon Watch is in effect for Guam Coastal Waters. Winds near 150 knots with gusts to 180 knots and seas up to 45 feet are possible. Mariners should secure vessels and seek safe harbor immediately.

• Prepare today for the protection of life and property.
• Review your household emergency plan.
• Prepare an emergency kit with enough food, water, medications, disinfectant supplies, and pet supplies for 7–10 days.
• Clear loose debris, secure outdoor items, and clean drainage areas around your property.
• If you live near streams or rivers, move belongings away from flood-prone areas.
• If using a generator, operate it outdoors only, at least 20 feet from your home. Never use it inside a house, garage, or enclosed space.
• Secure important documents in a waterproof bag.
• Check on elderly and disabled neighbors and family members.
• Stay away from beaches and coastal areas.
• If you live in a metal-roof or container home, near the coast, or in a flood-prone area, plan to relocate to a designated public shelter or the sturdy home of family or friends. Pets are not allowed in public shelters.
• Stay updated with the latest information from NWS Guam and GHS/OCD.

GHS/OCD will continue to monitor Super Typhoon Bavi in coordination with NWS Guam and provide updates as the situation develops.
