GHS/OCD, in coordination with NWS Guam, has issued Public Advisory No. 3 regarding Typhoon Bavi (09W). Key points:
- Bavi has strengthened from a tropical storm to a typhoon, with maximum sustained winds now at 80 mph, up from 60 mph Thursday afternoon.
- As of 7:00 a.m. ChST, Bavi was located near 12.7°N 156.1°E — approximately 760 miles east of Guam — moving west-northwest at 14 mph.
- There are no tropical cyclone watches or warnings in effect for Guam at this time.
- Rapid intensification is expected to occur today and for the next day or two; JTWC states the environment is optimal for rapid intensification, which could start imminently.
- Current forecast tracks show a super typhoon passing near or just south of Tinian, mid to late Monday morning — this is a forecast, not a guarantee. The overall track could still shift farther south and closer to Guam, or farther north.
- All Guam and CNMI residents should anticipate at least tropical storm conditions; islands closest to the passage could see much stronger conditions.
