Tropical Storm Bavi (09W) — Guam Preparedness Update
Issued: July 2, 2026 — 1700 ChST
Guam Homeland Security/Office of Civil Defense (GHS/OCD), in coordination with the National Weather Service (NWS) in Tiyan, is issuing the following update regarding Tropical Storm Bavi (09W). This is an update to GHS/OCD Public Advisory No. 1, issued 0800 ChST July 2, 2026.
THERE ARE NO TROPICAL CYCLONE WATCHES OR WARNINGS IN EFFECT FOR GUAM AT THIS TIME.
CURRENT STATUS
- Tropical Storm 09W has been named Tropical Storm Bavi (09W).
- TS Bavi continues to gain strength and become better organized as it heads toward the Marianas.
- As of the 4:01 p.m. ChST National Weather Service Special Weather Statement, TS Bavi had maximum sustained winds of 60 mph, up from 45 mph this morning.
- TS Bavi was located near 11.2°N 159.7°E — approximately 1,015 miles east of Guam, or 975 miles southeast of Saipan.
WHAT TO EXPECT
- This could be a significant event for Guam, with impacts extending into the broader Marianas region.
- TS Bavi is expected to continue strengthening, likely passing between Guam and Anatahan as a well-developed typhoon.
- The typhoon may undergo rapid intensification before and/or during its approach to the Marianas.
- Significant impacts to infrastructure are a distinct possibility.
- The exact track, and how close the center will come to Guam, remains uncertain.
- The exact timing of the worst conditions and how long they will last remain uncertain.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO NOW
- All residents of Guam should continue to PREPARE NOW for the typhoon.
- Review your household emergency plan.
- Prepare an emergency kit with enough food and water for 7–10 days, including medication, disinfectant supplies, and pet supplies.
- Clear loose debris, secure outdoor items that could become airborne, and clear drainage areas and storm drains around your property.
- If using a generator, never run it inside a house, garage, or any enclosed space — even with doors or windows open. Operate outdoors only, at least 20 feet from your home.
- Check on elderly and disabled neighbors and family members to see if they need help preparing.
- Have multiple ways to receive updated storm information.
- Stay up to date with the latest information from NWS Guam (weather.gov/gum) and GHS/OCD.
GHS/OCD will continue to monitor Tropical Storm Bavi in coordination with NWS Guam and provide updates as the situation develops.
