Tropical Storm 09W — Marianas Preparedness Update

Guam Homeland Security/Office of Civil Defense (GHS/OCD), in coordination with the National Weather Service (NWS) in Tiyan, is issuing the following update regarding Tropical Storm 09W, formerly Tropical Depression 09W
(previously Invest 95W).
THERE ARE NO TROPICAL CYCLONE WATCHES OR WARNINGS IN EFFECT FOR GUAM AT THIS TIME.
CURRENT STATUS
- Tropical Depression 09W was upgraded to Tropical Storm 09W early this morning.
- As of the 7:00 a.m. ChST Joint Typhoon Warning Center Bulletin #4, TS 09W was located near 10.8°N 160.9°E — approximately 1,100 miles east-southeast of Guam.
- TS 09W was moving northwest at 15 mph, with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph.
WHAT TO EXPECT
- Of note, the JTWC indicates the surrounding environment is highly favorable for rapid intensification, and rapid intensification is now expected in the coming days.
- Numerical models and forecast tracks continue to indicate a passage of a tropical cyclone through the Marianas late Sunday into Monday (July 5–6).
- Guam, Rota, Tinian and/or Saipan are all within the range of possibility of seeing a direct hit by a major typhoon. This latest forecast indicates TS 09W could reach Category 4 super typhoon strength at the time of passage.
- All residents across Guam and the CNMI should plan for and anticipate at least tropical storm conditions. However, island(s) closest to the passage, or those potentially with a direct hit, would most likely see much stronger conditions.
- This is where the uncertainty remains: will the current track of 09W shift further to the south, or to the north. These shifts remain likely in the coming days as 09W nears.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO NOW
- Take steps now to prepare for the protection of life and property.
- Review your household emergency plan.
- Prepare an emergency kit with enough food and water for 7–10 days, including medication, disinfectant supplies, and pet supplies.
- Clear loose debris, secure outdoor items that could become airborne, and clear drainage areas and storm drains around your property.
- Stay up to date with the latest information from NWS Guam (weather.gov/gum) and GHS/OCD.
GHS/OCD will continue to monitor Tropical Storm 09W in coordination with NWS Guam and provide updates as the situation develops.
